The Department of Greek/Hellenic
Education provides the opportunity to learn the tools that will assist
in spiritual growth through the Hellenic Language. The Hellenic language
is the language of virtue. The Principles of Plato, Aristotle and
others prepared the way for Christianity. It was not by accident that
27 books of the New Testament - Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, Letters
of St. Paul, St. James, Revelations, to name a few, were written in
Greek. The theology of our Christian faith was developed by our Great
Fathers in Greek. In the Gospel according to St. John 12:20-23 when
the Greeks arrived, Jesus stated, "The hour has come that the
Son of Man should be glorified." Our Heavenly Father allowed
the Greek Language to be a vehicle to articulate His Word. Even in
the United States, President Thomas Jefferson, who was a scholar of
Greek, wanted Greek to be the national language of the United States.
The Greek language lost out by only one vote. Today, studying Greek
is stressed in all seminaries of major religions all around the world.
The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh strives to educate all
that want to learn Greek through their church schools to not only
become proficient with communicating in modern Greek but to grow spiritually
by incorporating Biblical Greek within their courses. Hellenic education
includes language development, history, culture, and liturgical understanding.
The department, under the guidelines of the Archdiocese, provides
programs that give support to all the current church schools and provides
assistance to those that wish to start or reinstitute a Greek School
program. |
